Using the OVM9724 CameraCubeChip® and OV788 ASIC, the New Laryngoscope Reference Design Improves Patient Comfort and Safety During Intubation Procedures
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — JUNE 12, 2017— OMNIVISION Technologies Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, collaborating with COMedia Ltd., today announced the availability of a reference design that brings visualization to single-use laryngoscopes. Using OMNIVISION’s OVM9724 CameraCubeChip® and its OV788 ASIC, the reference design delivers industry-leading imaging performance and features, and enables medical device manufacturers to incorporate visualization in their products for the rapidly growing single-use laryngoscope market.
Many medical procedures involve intubation, resulting in over 100 million intubations performed globally each year. The vast majority of these are done using a direct-line-of-sight technique that if performed incorrectly, can cause harm, or in extreme cases, prove fatal to the patient. Separately, incidents of cross-contamination and hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) due to improper sterilization of reusable devices are becoming more common. Combined with increased sterilization cost, the adoption of single-use devices is accelerating.
“While laryngoscopes have been around for many years, adding visualization to them is a fairly recent development. Incorporating digital imaging technology in intubation procedures can greatly improve patient safety and comfort, while also making the procedures simpler, easier and quicker to perform by doctors. The technology also allows the procedure to be recorded for insurance and for litigation defense purposes,” said Tehzeeb Gunja, senior product marketing and business development manager at OMNIVISION. “Our imaging technologies make it possible to mass-produce compact single-use devices that deliver excellent image quality at low cost.”
“Our collaboration with OMNIVISION brings visualization to medical devices for procedures that were previously performed with an obstructed line-of-sight,” said KC Yeung, CEO at COMedia. “By aligning our core capabilities in hardware, software and mechanical design with OMNIVISION’s industry-leading digital imaging technologies, we’ve developed a reference design that provides a low-cost, small form-factor and manufacturing-ready solution with a quick time-to-market that lowers the barrier of entry for visualization capabilities in the single-use laryngoscope market.”
The reference design is an ideal solution due to excellent image quality, compact dimensions and low cost. It is based on the OVM9724 CameraCubeChip® wafer-level camera module, which measures 3.9 x 2.9 x 2.3 mm, and captures 720p high definition video at 30 frames per second (FPS). The video stream is then processed by the OV788, an extremely power-efficient, highly integrated multimedia companion chip that features an embedded advanced image signal processor (ISP) with multiple input and output formats.
OMNIVISION will be showcasing the reference design at booth 2162 during MD&M East, June 13-15, 2017.
